Where Are the Jobs?

American life is supposed to be about all Americans having a chance to live the American Dream, not about who they know or how big someone's bank account is that determines whether or not he/she gets a job. Having opportunity in America shouldn't be dependent upon a person's family or who he/she marries. America is supposed to be about the pursuit of happiness and prosperity for all, not a select few. Americans need jobs, not so much loans. And those who need refinancing need to hear "Yes," and not "You make too little money" or "Your credit history is not good enough for refinancing." Americans are tired of being used and abused by employers and by bankers. They want sustainable and growing incomes and they want to have a real chance to use their talents and live the American Dream. They want a real chance for their dreams to come true: to be hired and a company to invest in them, to be appreciated, to pay their bills and provide for their families, and be able to take vacations. They want employers and bankers to be sensitive to their needs of food, shelter, and family responsibility. And part time workers want full time benefits: health insurance, pay raises, paid vacations, education reimbursement, and employee discounts. Part-time employees also want three-quarter pay in regards to a regular employee working full-time in the same position. And anything that is not regarded as full-time employment is automatically part-time; meaning, whether a person is working 1 hour or 35 hours--whatever is not considered full-time is then part-time.

Of all the demands on a person applying for work, one of the best things a person can include on his/her application is an earned degree. The top areas to study and to obtain a full-time position with great pay are nursing, conservation, engineering, computer programing, and business.

Nursing

Nursing is a great field to get into if a person can pass the test to enter the program. Once in the program, a person needs to devote him/herself to the studying and expectations at hand. A great advantage to the nursing field is only a select number of applicants are granted access into the field. The selecting of individuals who are more likely to succeed in the program is a way to keep pay high for the individuals once obtaining the nursing degree and work available. For this simple screening process, a person receiving a degree in nursing is more likely to find a job than most looking for a teaching job. When a person cannot find work in their field of expertise, that makes the degree essentially worthless, which is NOT the case for anyone with a degree in nursing. The link to your right entails some positions available at this time for nurses.

Conservation

Another great field to study is conservation. With the start ups of green energy, conservation is playing a key role for job growth. Conservation is more than protecting, preserving, and restoring, but it is also about managing natural resources. Some of the broad subjects a person going into conservation will study are chemicals, astronomy, geography, geology, agriculture, wild life, natural resources, and engineering. Each area has its own specific fields, so a person will venture into those fields based on interest or need for their job. Some of the jobs a person can apply to right now in conservation are provided in the links to your right.

Engineering

Engineers are high dollar earners. The word engineer is derived from the word ingeniā meaning to design, devise. An engineer can be someone other than a person at the wheel of a locomotive (train), but engineers are also in other specific fields such as environmental, mechanical, computer, electrical, and civil just to name a few. Dictionary.com defines engineer this way, "to arrange, manage, or carry through by skillful or artful contrivance." Computer Programming

The need for computer programing is expected to decline 3% by 2018, still nonetheless, 3% is not a significant reduction that indicates the field will be saturated. What it does indicate is that those already in the field of computer programming may propel into software engineering as they gain experience in programming and as software engineering positions will increase by then.

Business

Sometimes just a little training at a business school will propel a natural born sales person into the right opportunity at the right time, the rest of us need a little bit more work, which is why we have business as a degree field on nearly every college campus. Although many businesses do not concentrate on training, a business minded person understands that conducting business and selling is an art. Business people earn some of the highest incomes in America, yet many people will often say they don't like business people, which is quite paradoxical because at the same time they admire the business person's success. Jobs in business come in many shapes and sizes, for instance, business finance, business communication, and business intelligence. Some of the top paying business jobs can be found on the following link.

It's never too late. Professor Howard Gardner of Harvard University tells us that we are able to turn weaknesses into strengths, so if we think we can't do something, if we practice long enough in it we will get good at it. So, if anyone wants to become a nurse, he/she just needs to commit to the study as a first priority and he/she will achieve the goal. Committing is key. If a person says, she wants to do or be something and she never engages in the study on a full-time basis, then she is only kidding herself. Then she'll say, "It didn't work for me," which gives her an excuse to stop trying.

My niece just graduated from nursing school, and got a job from http://nurse.tv, as a traveling nurse. She is working in Vancouver, British Columbia, and she loves it. She sent us some pictures of where she lives and works and they were beautiful. I kinda wish that my daughters would have gone that route, just to get more life experience.

The five fields listed encompass a wide range of opportunity, that if a person gets the fundementals in any one of the fields, he/she will have his/her choice of positions. Engineering is more than just a desk job. A desk job is only one position available to engineers. Many engineering jobs are hands on, managing projects on site, and creating protypes just to name a few more positions available to an engineer. The positions are vast and wide, and a young person shouldn't think he/she will not find a position to fit his/her interest. What is certain with teaching positions is math and physic teachers are needed, yet many other positions are also being cut and replaced with computer modules. Teaching is a risky field to be in if a person's goal is to marry, raise a family, and live the American Dream which usually consists of a financially abundant life.

Some stategies for young college students, take out no student loans and if so, put half of it in the bank. Build up enough savings to open a certificate of deposit and just let the money sit there and grow. This way when the loans become due, the graduate will have money to pay back the loans, even if the graduate has no job right after college. Substantial money in the bank builds a credit history, and just paying the loan off one month at a time or two months at a time will also build that credit history. (Don't pay it off in one lump sum.)

In America, people hold certain assumptions that are outdated for today's changing world and will not carry them into the future. The structure of business has changed, yet Americans are behind in their understanding of it and will only meet the face of change with frustration and disappointment.

I love the GEICO commercial of the Kiddie Day Care run by robots. The mom says she likes it because it's free, but the children are terrorized by one robot who picks up a toddler and begins carrying him over to the waste basket. The commercial is a parody in regards to not far from the truth of where our system of educating our children is headed.

Every time I hear of lists like this, I think "But I'm not interested in any of these fields!!"

My son was in engineering school for his freshman year, then transferred to another school to be a HS physics and math teacher. He told me, "I don't want to sit behind a desk all day." He's too social and loves to help people.

You have to do what you love and (hope) the money will follow.
